a cabinet of curiositiesAn illustrated cabinet of curiosities created during the month of October 2020 as part of the DRAWTOBER challenge. The prompt list came from Chloe Christine (@heyitscloe) and the color palette was grabbed from Awesome Color (@AWSMColor).
Along with limiting myself to a 4 color palette, I limited myself to using 5 brushes in Procreate for the series. Each individual illustration was created in Procreate and the final composition was assembled in Photoshop. Fairly early on in the series, I knew that I wanted to compose a full piece of each object within the cabinet. I roughed out a sketch based on the pieces I had already done at that point, but it changed quite a bit once all of them were completed. Some of this had to do with the scale of the objects: how later in the series there was less variation in the size of the objects. So in order to keep it more considered and appearing full- almost cluttered, I moved the objects around and added more shelves to make it less orderly. From the start the one thing I knew was that the bone (whale vertebrae) would be too big to fit inside the cabinet. |
the in-between definitive companion vol. 1
A series of illustrations created for the podcast, Thaddeus Ellenburg's Casual Friday for the episode Odyssey Into the Unknown: The In-Between Definitive Companion Vol. 1. It was inspired by a mutual love of the original run of The Twilight Zone. From Thaddeus Ellenburg:
“In a world of black and white, there is a region of gray. A sector beyond the senses, surreal and unseen by man. A realm that stretches into the seam of space and time. An area unconfined by consciousness or bound by blood. This is a place we control, with the flip of a switch and a turn of the dial. For the next thirty minutes, we provide the path and provisions, on an odyssey into the unknown. A course paved with terror and illuminated by knowledge. Place one fearful foot in front of the other, for a brief stroll through...The In-Between.”
Title cards were created for 6 fictional episodes. Each illustration was done in Procreate and then the variations with the titles were edited in Photoshop. Like the Cabinet of Curiosities, I limited myself to a 4 color palette and 5 Procreate brushes.
You can see the whole series with the episode descriptions from Thaddeus Ellenburg here:

100 days of state flowers and wildflowers |
An illustrated series created as part of The 100 Day Project.
The series features 100 vector illustrations of the official state flowers and wildflowers of the United States. In some states, there were no official state wildflowers so I chose ones commonly found in those states. I created a circular grid to use as the template for each in the interest of uniformity and for a mathematical precision.
All flowers were designed and created in Animate, which I find to be more intuitive than Illustrator for drawing and design.

pandemic food food food
When we went into lockdown in New York in mid March of 2020, I found myself drawing food that I was making. It was very low stakes and it was soothing in how mindless it was. I wasn't concerned with getting it exactly right, but more that it caught the essence of what it was. While I didn't realize it at the time, it served as an exercise in playing with new styles and techniques. This marked my entry into bringing more textural elements to my work.
At a certain point I started dreaming about food that I couldn't make, whether it's because I can't figure out the right proportions to make my own Mission style burrito, or I haven't had enough practice making really good byrek, and so instead of enjoying those foods I drew them.
Pictured here: Pepperoni and Jalapeno Pizza, Super Burrito from El Super Burrito, Red Beans and Rice
All created in Procreate.

oh, the rare old whale
This project started as a series created for The 100 Day Project.
As a child I devoured books about whales and was especially charmed by the illustrations. I committed to a list of 100 whale based subjects and illustrated them. Each illustration was drawn on paper, inked by hand, and then scanned into Photoshop to get colored.
This ultimately evolved into what my ideal book about whales would look like. It would have the obvious stuff, like the different species of whales, dolphins and porpoises, but it would also have curious things about whales. There would be internal structures, behaviors, the evolution of whales, life cycles, a section on Yankee Whaling, and more (including an appearance by Herman Melville).
My intention is to compile these illustrations into a small, hardbound book with some text accompanying each illustration.
The whole project in its current form and iteration can be found here:
